How to Measure U-Bolts for Leaf Springs

A small part of your vehicle suspension can make a noticeable and functional difference when it isn’t functioning properly. One of those parts is the U-bolt. This guide shares how to identify the type of U-bolt on your vehicle, what exactly a U-bolt does on your leaf spring, and the parts you need to measure if you need a replacement.

What is a U-bolt on a leaf spring?

A U-bolt is exactly what it sounds like: a bolt shaped like the letter ‘U’. It wraps around your vehicle’s axle and connects to the leaf spring, holding everything tightly together. You can find them on the underside of your vehicle, where the axle meets the suspension.

What does a U-bolt do?

In the automotive industry, the U-bolt is referred to as an industrial-sized paper clip that keeps your axle, leaf spring and suspension bound as a unit. Without it, your suspension would become unstable.

As your suspension absorbs vibrations from the road, U-bolts are engineered to allow some movement under torque for flexibility. This ensures your axle is secure while the leaf springs do their job.

Types of U-bolts on a leaf spring

The type of U-bolt for your vehicle depends on your axle and leaf spring design. Some are longer, some may be custom-made, but the three most common shapes are:

  • Round bend: Designed for round axles
  • Square bend: Used with square or flattened axles
  • Semi-round or special bends: A combination that fits axles with unique shapes

Matching the shape of a U-bolt to your axle is just as important as getting the measurements right.

What measurements do you need for a U-bolt?

When replacing U-bolts for your leaf spring, you need a secure fit for a safe drive. Even the slightest millimetre out could cause installation issues or complications for your suspension.

You need three measurements:

  • Leg height (A): The length from the bottom of the bend (the start of the curve) to the tip of the bolt leg
  • Inside diameter (B): The distance between the inner space of the bolt legs
  • Rod width (C): The thickness of the bolt leg

Why would a U-bolt need replacing?

U-bolts may need to be replaced over time due to the stress they experience. Just like any other component of your commercial vehicle’s suspension, U-bolts may loosen or corrode and fall short of safe driving.

Reasons you may need to replace U-bolts include:

  • General wear and tear
  • Rust and corrosion
  • Leaf spring replacement

Ignoring worn U-bolts can lead to serious and expensive damage as loose U-bolts allow lead springs to shift and wiggle too much, and the axle can become misaligned. In extreme cases, a broken U-bolt can cause the leaf spring to detach from the axle.

You should regularly check your leaf springs and the surrounding nuts and bolts to avoid damage to your vehicle’s suspension system. For your vehicle to run as smoothly as possible, you should be aware of the signs your leaf spring is failing.
